5 Superfoods That Aren’t Always Good for You

Today we have not only trends in fashion, culture, and lifestyle, but also trends in food. People are super concerned about what they eat. They want to eat tasty and healthy food. Even the manufacturers and the way this food was grown and cooked are important today. For vegans and vegetarians, food is a serious part of their life philosophy.

Superfoods are the trends in food among people who are into a healthy and mindful lifestyle. In addition, they are popular among athletes and people who are eager to lose weight. There is a list of products that have special properties beneficial for people’s health an beauty. Surely all of you heard or read about them in public media.

But are they that good? There is always another side of the coin. Let’s see what unexpected risks hide in popular healthy products. We don’t want to proclaim them less healthy or blame dietitians and scientists of lying about them. All we want to say is that you should be moderate in consuming them because their excess may cause unpleasant health issues.

1. Avocado

This fruit is widely advertised for the healthy fats it contains. However, fat is still fat and it’s rich in calories. Many people think that healthy fat can be consumed in huge amounts and they won’t cause harm. It’s a mistake because a high-calorie diet will make you gain weight and face all the problems extra weight brings. 1/3 of a medium-sized avocado is the recommended amount to have all the benefits from this product without gaining weight.

2. Kale

Yes, that almighty kale everybody gone mad about is also not perfect. It has the reputation of a magic remedy that is good for everything, from raising your kids into super people to uterine fibroids treatment. However, if you eat too much kale, you can have thyroid issues. Thiocyanate contained in it has the ability to collect in the body and slow down the iodine metabolism. This is why your thyroid gland may be out of order. Be careful with kale to avoid that.

3. Quinoa

This product is tasty, rich in protein, gluten-free, and packed with nutrients. What’s not to love? Together with healthy components, quinoa contains saponins that can cause problems with digestion. Discomfort and irritation in your stomach are probably not what you imagine when you think of health benefits.

4. Salmon

This fatty fish has numerous benefits for health that were approved by so many scientific studies. But there is still one problem induced by humanity’s activity. Fish meat collects all the heavy metals and contaminants from water. If you eat fatty fish more than twice a week, you can have such metals as mercury slowly collecting in your body as well, so it’s not recommended to eat it every day.

5. Chia seeds

This product is also very popular due to its ability to speed up metabolism and a unique combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, like any plant, it can cause an allergic reaction. It is also not recommended for people who have gastrointestinal diseases.

Does it mean you should be afraid of these products? Not at all! Any remedy can become a poison if you overdose yourself with it. A diverse and moderate diet is the key to healthy living.
